There have been many kind comments and queries about my shawl. The shawl
is
one of my Barbara Lundy Stone projects. I used her seaweed cotton ribbon
which you can purchase at http://www.blueheronyarns.com/
Materials:
The stitch pattern is my own variation on Feather and Fan, described
in some detail below and doubtless NOT my sole invention. Made from one
skein of the yarn (approx. 850 yards) on US10 needles, the shawl measures
23-24" by 60".
Pattern:
Assume the garter stitch edge of choice. I did four stitches and marked
them to remember!
I also did four repetitions of the pattern. So 8 edge stitches plus 72 pattern stitches (4x18) = 80 stitches total.
Cast on your chosen number of stitches (using th guide above) and knit 4 rows.
Row 1: Knit edge stitches,[K2tog three times, (YO, K1) six times, K2tog
three times] repeat, knit edge stitches
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: Knit
Row 4: Knit edge stitches, purl to end of pattern stitches, knit edge
stitches
Row 5: Knit edge stitches, [K2tog three times, (YO, K1) six times,
K2tog three times] repeat, knit edge stitches
Row 6: Knit
Row 7: Knit
Row 8: Knit edge stitches, purl to end of pattern stitch, knit edge
stitches
(Basically two repetitions of BW's version of feather and fan. This is the wave part)
Row 9: Knit edge stitches, [K2tog three times, (YO, K1) six times, K2tog
three times] repeat, knit edge stitches
Row 10: Knit edge stitches, *(P5, K9, P4)* to end of pattern stitches,
knit edge stitches
(You are purling all the K2tog AND the first and last YO, leaving a ridge in the middle YO pattern)
Row 11: Knit
Row 12: Knit edge stitches, purl to end of pattern stitches, knit edge
stitches
Row 13: Knit edge stitches, [K2tog three times, (YO, K1) six times,
K2tog three times] repeat, knit edge stitches
Row 14: Knit edge stitches, *(P5, K9, P4)* to end of pattern stitches,
knit edge stitches
Row 15: Knit
Row 16: Knit edge stitches, purl to end of pattern stitchES, knit edge
stitches
(These eight rows are the shell part, where you can really see
the range of color in a variegated
yarn. The only really tricky rows are 10 and 14)
Repeat as long as needed. Will block larger in wool than cotton, of course.
