Socks
Size:
These socks fit a large ladies foot (approx. 10.5)

Materials:
One 50gr ball of cotton 4 ply in your desired colour (MC - purple) and
one 50gr ball in a second colour (C1 - deep red).
One set (4) needles 2.25mm.

Gauge:
Approx 35 sts to 10 cm.

Sock Number One
Using MC, cast on 72 stitches, join into a round.

P1, K1 ribbing for 22 rows.

Change to C1 and knit, in the round, for 38 rows. (60 rows altogether)

Heel
Knit the next 16 stitches and slip last 18 stitches from the other end onto the same needle (these 34 stitches form the heel). Slip the remaining (these are the instep stitches) 38 stitches onto two needles.

Change to MC and complete 31 rows in stocking stitch.

Turn heel
Knit first 19 stitches, k2 tog, k1, turn;
Purl 6, P2 tog, P1, turn;
Knit 7, K2 tog, K1, turn;
continue in this way until you have 20 stitches remaining.

Place the instep stitches back onto one needle.

Knit the first 10 stitches of the heel on one needle. Using second needle, knit remaining 10 stitches (this finishes heel).
Change to C1 and evenly knit up 17 stitches along the heel. Using next needle, knit across stitches on instep. Using another needle,  again knit up 17 stitches on heel and knit across the last 10 stitches.

Decrease for instep
First row: knit.

Second row: knit to last four stitches on first needle, knit 2 tog, knit 2. Knit across stitches on instep. On third needle, knit 2, slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over; knit to end.

Third row: Knit.

Continue decreasing in this manner until you have 19 stitches on needles one and three (ie half instep stitches on needles one and three).

Continue, without shaping, until you have completed 75 rows from where you knit up stitches along the heel.

Decrease for toes:

Knit, using C1, the first needle until you get to the last three stitches and then k2 tog, knit 1. Now change to MC and on second needle, K1, Slip 1, psso, knit to last three stitches and then knit 2 tog, knit one. One third needle, K1, slip 1, psso and knit to end of needle.

Next row: knit.

Next row: decrease as before: one first needle knit to last three stitches and then K2 tog, knit 1. On second needle k1, slip 1, psso knit to last three stitches, k2 tog, K1. On third needle k1, slip 1, psso, knit to end.

Next row: knit.

Continue decreasing in alternate rows until you have 20 stitches remaining.

Finish toes in your usual method (I usually use the Kitchener stitch).

Sock Number Two
Complete as above, but reverse the colours
