1. Book Organization
Joan Schrouder 2/12/03
Knit Book Organization - I have 40' of shelf space full of
knitting books and mags, and probably could use another 25',
since I have stacks and/or boxes elsewhere. For the books, I
considered organizing by topic, but some of my books cover a
broad range, so it would hard to decide, let alone remember,
where to put it. Instead, I organize totally by author.
And of course, when I'm ready to research a topic, I then have
to go thru all of them to find the particular topics! (hey,
I can't be logical all the time.
OK, add to list of "things to do when I'm retired - re-organize
knitting books.

2. Magazine Delivery
Does anyone know if this magazine
varies widely in when it gets delivered? I've noticed that lots
of people have received theirs, and I haven't.
I'm going ahead and adressing this in the public forum, because
I think that it's an issue (pardon the term (:-) for a lot of
knitters. Here's what I learned on another list, having to do
with another magazine, which I suspect is fairly standard treatment
-
Magazine issues get mailed out over a fairly short period,
like just a day or three, from a distribution center. But how
fast or slow they get to your mail box is dependable on the
postal system, not only in your area, but between the distribution
center *and* your area. Sometimes the subscriptions get to your
box before you see them on the newsstands, and sometimes not.
I usually see about a 2-3 wk variance in reception on various
lists, at least within the continental US, and it's not uncommon
for it to be a whole week between two receptions in the same
town.
The recommendation was to wait 2-3 wks from when you first hear
reports of sightings, and then contact the company if you still
haven't received your issue.

3. Yarn in Mags

What is with putting patterns in magazines that use yarns
that are no longer available by the time one gets the magazine?
Some of these yarns disappear so quickly. Why don't designers
just use the "usually available" yarns so we can all find them?
Yes, it's frustrating to not be able to find the yarns. But
it's a fact of the knitting business that it's the yarn companies
who buy advertising in the magazines and often pay at least
part of the designer's fees, so therefore they're going to stipulate
use of their yarns. IOW the designer doesn't always have a say
in the choice of yarns.
Another issue is that the yarn manufacturing business is tied
into the fashion industry. eg chartreuse yesterday, navy tomorrow.
Designs are often called for nearly a year in advance of the
magazine issue. It's a real gamble whether the yarn may still
be available by the time the magazine comes out.
Fortunately, there are tons of different yarns out there. So,
while the exact yarn/color may no longer be available, there
are often substitutes that can give a similar result. LYS's
will usually be happy to help, and now with the availability
of the Internet, even more options are available.
